Tibor Soós was born in Miskolc, in Hungary. He received his Ph.D. degree from Eötvös University in 1998 in Hungary under the guidance of Prof. György Hajós. Then he was awarded NSF and Humboldt fellowships and worked with Prof. John Gladysz in Salt Lake City, USA and Erlangen, Germany from 1999-2001. In 2001, he was appointed to an academic position at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and started his own research program. His work includes design of organocatalysts that promote fundamentally important organic reactions and investigations their mechanisms. He has developed several catalysts whose usefulness and practicality are amply demonstrated by their frequent use. He serves on the International Advisory Board of the European Journal of Organic Chemistry, Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry and he is a consultant for several chemical companies.
